Alex Clare- “Too Close”
I don’t know if I’m allowed to like this song. It’s almost dubstepish/EDM. But it’s still mainstream sounding. Hmm.
The video. Oooh. Look. Abandoned warehouse/power plant/old factory. And some Crouching Tiger. Eh. It’s ok.

Better Than Ezra- “King of New Orleans”
Did I use this video before? I think I did when this blog was on Blogger and not Tumblr. Anyway. This video almost cost Better Than Ezra’s bassist, Tom Drummond, his career. About 2:40 into the video, you see him punch the wall, and the blood tricking down his hand in the next shot. According to old interviews, the cut was a lot deeper than it looked, and if it was just a few centimeters one way or the other, he would have torn a ligament or two.
Now, mind you, the band has been known to lie before, like about the origin of their band name. But still. It’s like twisting your ankle walking the dog. You tell everyone you did it in a bar fight. Because it sounds cooler that way.

NeverShoutNever- “I Love You 5”
One year ago, today, a city that I know and love was torn apart by an EF-5 Tornado.
Joplin, Missouri was a city of about 50,000 in the southwest corner of the state. I lived just across the border in Pittsburg, Kansas until 2009, but knew Joplin well. But one year ago, the city was suddenly changed. 7,500 homes were damaged or destroyed. 160 people lost their lives in Joplin and neighboring Duquesne, and a year later, there is still a large scar through town that is slowly healing, and being rebuilt, but will forever be there.
So today, I use an artist from Joplin, and a music video shot in Joplin a few years before the tornado. Never Shout Never is Christofer Drew Ingle’s brainchild. He dropped out of Joplin High School to pursue his musical career. In late 2009, he filed the video for this song “I Love You 5” in his hometown of Joplin. I’m not exactly sure where in town it is, but it was said that his house was not damaged by the tornado, so I don’t think it was in the Southern portion of the city.
So, in honor of Joplin, Missouri, one year after the tornado, it’s Joplin’s own Never Shout Never with “I Love You 5”

The Connells- “‘74-‘75”
This is a combination of “end of the schoolyear-ish,” “this song randomly came up on a radio station I was listening to” and “In college, on a TV show I worked on, we played this video at the end of each year.”
Combine those three and you get today’s simple, yet great video.

Soul Asylum- “Runaway Train”
This video won basically every MTV VMA in 1993, and rightfully so. Its been rumored that 75% of the kids shown in this video returned home. There is OTHER news of some sad results to others. Either way, nearly 20 years later, the video still holds its emotional weight.

The Wallflowers- “Three Marlenas”
Jakob Dylan announced on his website recently that the Wallflowers have reunited and are putting the finishing touches on a brand new studio album. With this, Eve 6’s new album, and Better Than Ezra expecting a fall release date for a new album, it’s like 1998 all over again!
The video? Well, for it’s time, it was some cool CGI.
